Meet MSC Head Coach James Hornby
James has been coaching for 20 years, so we thought we would ask him a few questions...
Tell us about your coaching career?
“I started at Waroona Swim Club, where my 2 kids were swimming competitively. I originally started as the Vice President of the club and then progressed through to President, and then I took on the role of head coach to keep the small club going.
I have also coached at Western Sprints, Kingsway and Breakers swim club, whilst running my own private coaching business”
What are some of the highlights of your coaching career?
“I have had multiple national swimmers reaching multiple finals, with the best result being one of the boys winning national gold in the 100 fly, and silver in the 200 Fly in 2017.
On a personal level, I was one of the Swimming WA high performance pathway coaches, and worked with swimmers that were on the 2020 Tokyo olympic development squad in WA. In 2017 I was nominated for National Age Group Coach of the year, an award given at the SwimmingWA awards to recognise the most successful coaches from national age championships”
Wow! That’s awesome, so what is the best thing about being a swim coach?
“The best thing about coaching is helping and seeing the kids reaching their goals at all levels, whatever that may be. Also being able to work closely together with other great coaches”
Can you tell us something interesting and/or funny about you, that not many people will know?
“Wherever I go I end up with silly hat and wig pics. People might not know that I’m a grandfather of a nearly seven year old grandson. I also made it on the front cover of the American coaching magazine with a famous Aussie coach, Bill Sweetenham (in case you don’t know, he was a world youth coach in Australia and the UK”
What’s your favourite colour?
“My favourite colour is red”
It is great to get to know a bit more about you James, last question...Tell us what do you love most about MSC?
“The best thing about the Mandurah swim club is definitely the great group of kids we have, how supportive the committee and parents have been since my appointment to head coach and the friendly family environment”
